Building on the traditions of portraiture, Julie creates gestural paintings to celebrate the power of the individual. The physicality of paint, its fluidity and unpredictability, heightened colour, thick brush marks and accidental drips, aim to transform the flat photographic images she uses as her starting point into emotionally charged paintings.
Why Julie joined this project
I was initially inspired to get involved by the children’s initiative to produce and sell ‘Inti’ magazine to pay their school fees and materials. I was also intrigued by the idea that some of the children thought that having a photograph taken was stealing a part of their soul, so I am curious as to whether the mutual exchange of artworks will make them feel more comfortable about being portrayed.
