Bernice’s practice is intensely occupied by the nuances of identity. By scrutinizing portraiture in various forms she attempts to stimulate her audience to consider identity differently. She is interested in peoples perception of surveillance; how gender is determined in the face; how we see and recognise people, or not as is the case for people with Prosopagnosia (faceblindness).

Why Bernice created this project

I spent 6 weeks in Sucre as part of a years travel in 2011, I worked with Philonena at “Inti” and the children selling the “Inti” magazine for a short period. When I returned home I simply wanted to do more for the children, help them have the chance of a way out of poverty. This project is hopefully a small contribution to do just that.
